Caregiver stress is a normal part of taking care of someone with Alzheimer’s, but there are steps you can take to help alleviate some of the pressure.

Being a care provider for someone with Alzheimer’s Disease can take a toll on the mind and the body. Physical, as well as mental health, can suffer for the primary caregiver, as they tend to prioritize the needs of their dependent over their own. Caregiver stress is a normal part of taking care of someone with Alzheimer’s disease, but there are steps you can take to help alleviate some of the pressure and make sure that you are taking care of your own needs, as well as theirs!

Here are some suggestions to get you going:

Breathing exercises can help you to calm down when dealing with a stressful situation. Taking deep breaths in and out to the count of 10, while picturing a calm and relaxing place can help you cool down before revisiting a stressful situation.

Meditation

If you can find time at the beginning or at the end of your day to meditate and set some intentions for your day ahead. Try taking 3-5 uninterrupted minutes just for yourself!

Get active

Getting physically active can help you to reset. Not only is it a great way to improve your physical health, but it is also a great way to work on your mental wellbeing. Physical exercise releases endorphins that make you feel happier and more relaxed. A daily walk, jog or a weekly yoga class can help get you physically and mentally in shape!

Utilize resources

From Facebook groups, to community resources, there is always support out there for you! From emotional support, to practical help – these can be a great outlet as well as a tool for you.

Take time

Take time to do things you enjoy! There are plenty of day-programs that could help with your dependent while you enjoy an afternoon doing something you love. Perhaps even asking a family member to visit for the day, once a month will allow you to maintain important self-care and social well-being.

Remember, taking care of yourself will help you to be at your best while caring for your dependent suffering from Alzheimer’s disease!
